7th Grade Math 5.2a, Calculating Markup
JoAnn's School
A markup is one type of percent increase. We can use a bar model to represent the retail price of an item. The retail price is the total price, including the markup. To make a profit to pay for expenses, stores mark up the prices on the items they sell. We walk-through a word problem in which we need to find a markup price for two different items. We draw a bar model for the cost of an item plus the markup. Retail price = original cost + markup. We show examples of how to write equations to markup cost for retail prices. We show how to find the constant of proportionality for a retail price. We show how we can estimate the markup for items to check if our answer is reasonable.
