7th Grade Math 4.1c, Using Unit Rates
JoAnn's School
We quickly review the definition of ratio, rate, and unit rate. We can use unit rates to simplify rates and ratios that appear complicated. When rates and ratios are given as compound fractions, unit rates can help us simplify them. Sometimes the information in a rate problem will be presented in the wrong order for the question asked. Units of time usually go in the denominator when a rate is written as a compound fraction. We walk-through how to find a unit rate from a given rate by using division. We also show how to find a unit rate by multiplying the numerator and denominator of a compound fraction by the same factor that will make the denominator equal to 1. We review how to compare mixed numbers.
