5th Grade Math 5.7, Write Zeros in the Dividend (to give it more digits)
JoAnn's School
When the dividend needs more digits for us to complete our division problem, we can write trailing zeros to the right side of the dividend. When we move the decimal point by multiplying the divisor and dividend by a power of 10, the dividend may need zeros as placeholders. When we're in the middle of solving a division problem and we run out of dividend digits, we can write trailing zeros to the right side of the dividend to continue dividing. Writing zeros to the right side of a decimal does not change the value of the decimal. We can write a zero in the dividend to write the quotient as a decimal amount, instead of a fraction. We solve a word problem using higher order thinking skills. We decide whether we need to write a zero in a dividend to find a quotient. We solve a rate of speed formula word problem that involves writing zeros in the dividend to complete our division.
