5th Grade Math 2.1, Place the First Digit in the Quotient for Long Division
JoAnn's School
We can tell where to place the first digit of a quotient in long division by relating division to multiplication and using estimation. As inverse operations, multiplication can help us estimate a partial quotient. We solve 4 long division problems step-by-step. We see how we can round a dividend to a number that can be divided by the divisor as an estimate. We show how to use multiplication to check our answer. We see what happens if we estimate too high, or too low, and how it will affect our calculations.
