Exploring the Ruins of the Historic Hartford Castle in Illinois | Do We make it Across the Moat?

#HartfordCastle #AbandonedIllinois #RealUrbex The Hartford Castle, located in the southwest corner of Illinois, was a beautiful 14 room mansion that a man by the name of Benjamin Biszant, built for his bride as a wedding present. It was lavishly decorated both inside and out and featured crystal chandeliers, a mirror lined main hall and a castle like turret. On the outside, several small man made islands were scattered around a moat, which surrounded the property of this historic location. There were gardens and ponds stocked with goldfish and even a railroad station that welcomed visitors to the castle.

Tragedy struck when Biszant's bride passed away and the home was abandoned by the very man who poured his heart and soul into its creation. Throughout the years, it is said to have been boys military school, a home for unwed mothers and even a prohibition era speakeasy. It would later be neglected and fall into disrepair and decay. In the early 1970's it became a party spot and a target for vandalism and theft. It met its final demise in 1973, when these same careless criminals burned this location to the ground.
