Set Hook Timing - The Correct Way - Lines On The Needle Bar Make it Easy!

This video shows the correct way to set and check your hook timing.

I see hook timing done incorrectly a lot. The timing needs to be done based on needle bar rise, not the relationship between the hook point and the needle eye (on these and many other makes and models at least).

The reasons you may want to set your timing or even just check it (and your needle bar height for that matter) is if your machine is missing stitches, even after installing a new needle. The other reason is if the timing gets upset because you've had to replace gears and the like.

If your machine has the timing marks on the needle bar then this video shows you how to set hook timing with the marks and relates to more than just Singer machines. If there are no marks on the needle bar, there are gauges available that can measure the needle bar rise. Once the hook timing is done, the needle bar height needs to be checked and adjusted if required.

Some more modern machines require you to adjust the needle bar height first and then set the hook to a specific distance above the needle eye which is quite a different procedure to these machines.
