Pulling up the bobbin thread is necessary to stop it tangling underneath and to allow the machine to start sewing properly.

Some machines have a mechanism that trims the bobbin thread to a specific length and holds the thread so you don't need to pick it up. A lot of older machines don't have that mechanism so I show both methods in the video.
