32.3 Installing the rear garage door
Home in the Earth
We had a good day to install the rear garage door in the ICF wall of my earth-sheltered Quonset hut. This is not really an installation video, but shows the modifications I made to make it fit in a shorter space. I also used a side mount door opener.
The doors were insulated Pella doors. The front ones were 7'x8', but this backdoor is 8'x8'. I got it from Lowes and had the price reduced significantly after showing them a similar looking door at Home Depot for a cheaper price.
The side door opener was a Lift Master 8500 purchased after a lot of research. It has a lot of cool features, including that "wireless" light and a timer that closes the door after a set amount of time. One interesting side feature is that you don't need to hop over the sensor if you are trying to get past while it is closing. It turns out that higher end garages can tell the difference between an obstacle and someone just trying to sneak out, so if you walk past quickly and while the door is still high enough, it will just keep on going.

Update: Thanks to feedback in the comments sections, I did end up buying some "high lift" drums that change radius as they spool up... I'll add a sequel to this eventually. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcV9OVIw9_Q
