Can we fix this lightning damaged Breville Coffee Machine?
FixTechStuff
In this video we try to repair a lightning damaged Breville Duo-Temp Pro Coffee Machine - BES810BSS The damage is bad, but the worst part is identifying the damaged part(s). Oddly this all seems strangely familiar to my last repair video...
More on surge protectors, I didn't want to go deep in the video because it would quickly get incredibly boring for those that came to see the repair. Surge protectors commonly use the term "joules" when referring to the amount of energy they absorb. 4000 joules is actually 4000 watts per second, 400 watts for 10 seconds etc. I believe the use of joules to be misleading and distracts people from the fact that surge protectors are massively overpriced for what they actually are (1 or more varistors, varistors which are in most electronics anyway). They do have a purpose and that is protecting your electronics from smaller surges or over voltage, but peace of mind? No they don’t offer that.
The unidentified part may just be a newer revision, as part of the original datasheet, which I do believe had an 8 pin version containing the optocoupler. In the meantime I will keep the board in storage for a potential future repair.
