10 Characteristics of Co-dependent People An exaggerated sense of responsibility for the actions of others, offering advice when unwanted An extreme need for approval and recognition, often doing more than their share Taking everything personally A tendency to confuse love and pity, “loving” people they can pity feeling responsible for fixing other people’s problems An unhealthy dependence on relationships to avoid the feeling of abandonment A sense of guilt when asserting themselves so they use manipulation, shame, or guilt to control others’ behavior A compelling need to control others, expecting them to do what they say Lack of trust in self and/or others Fear of being abandoned or alone Problems with intimacy/boundaries
