Driving to Hermit’s Rest A Scenic and Historic Road Trip in the Grand Canyon

Hermit’s Rest is the final destination of the Hermit Road, a 7-mile (11 km) scenic drive along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It is also the trailhead of the Hermit Trail, one of the oldest and most challenging trails in the park. In this video, I’ll show you how to drive to Hermit’s Rest, what to see and do along the way, and some tips and tricks for making the most of your visit.

Hermit Road is closed to private vehicles from March 1 to November 30, and can only be accessed by shuttle bus, bike, or foot. In the winter months, you can drive your own car and enjoy the road at your own pace. Either way, it’s a road trip you don’t want to miss.

Along the road, you’ll find 9 designated viewpoints, each offering a different perspective of the canyon. You’ll see the stunning scenery, the historic landmarks, and the wildlife of this national park. You’ll also learn some interesting facts and stories about the road and its namesake, the Hermit.

Hermit’s Rest is a historic building designed by Mary Colter, a famous architect who created many iconic structures in the Grand Canyon. It was built in 1914 as a rest stop for tourists who took mule rides down the Hermit Trail. Today, it serves as a gift shop, a snack bar, and a water bottle filling station. It also has a fireplace, a porch, and a beautiful canyon view.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also hike the Hermit Trail, which descends 4,340 feet (1,323 m) to the Colorado River. The trail is steep, rocky, and exposed, and requires a backcountry permit for overnight camping. It is not recommended for inexperienced hikers or during the summer heat.
