The PCF8574 I2C 8 Channel IO Expander. This device is found on a number of breakout boards, some like the one in the video are simple, others with additional component to support the 16 x 2 and 20 x 4 LCD displays. They are very simple to use and you can have up to eight of them in a single I2C bus. They can be used with the Arduino's or the Raspberry Pi.
In this video I use one with a 16 button membrane key pad.
