MR 4 Part 2 Rotating US Sensor
Cyber_One
I started to build this small robot as a platform to study Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM)
In this video I mounted a rotating Ultrasonic range finder.
Most implementations I've looked at so far have used a bit array to hold the position of obstacles. In a robot with very limited memory, this is not too efficient as the smaller processors won't have the memory to hold the map. If we instead used a line vector approach, then we can have a high resolution map that doesn't use anywhere near the same amount of RAM to hold a large map. If you look at most GPS system, they hold maps for entire countries in a very small amount of memory. What's more, more info can be stored about the types of objects on the map.
Other things we need to explore are how to get fine resolutions on our sensors when the detection arc is so wide.
All designs I make and links to others used will be in my GitHub on this project: https://github.com/Cyber-One/SLAM The repository will grow as I make more notes and observations with explanations of the maths used.
