In this video, I discuss one of the teachings of Christ that was banned or suppressed by the mainstream Christian Church as it grew in power.
The original follower of Christ can be referred to in some cases as 'Gnostics', and the Gnostics - although heavily persecuted by the Church throughout history - survived to the modern day, and their beliefs with them.
Gnosticism comes from the Greek word 'gnosis' which means knowledge.
One of the famous maxims found at the Temple of Delphi in Ancient Greece was 'gnothi seauton', which means 'Know thyself'.
In my understanding, the true meaning of this phrase is not to stay humble and know yourself on a personality or egoic basis (although it can certainly mean those things as well).
In my understanding, the true meaning of knowing 'thyself' is to recognise the divine spark of God within you.
This is what the gnostics taught, one lesson of theirs at least, and one that the Church saw as absolute heresy.
The gnostics believed and taught, because Jesus taught, that God dwells as a spark within each and every one of us.
Therefore, we are powerful beyond measure and connected with all that is.
Furthermore, the path to truth and empowerment can be found within us.
We do not need Church authorities or teachings to lead us to God.
God is right within us and loves us very deeply.
For obvious reasons, these types of teachings led to widespread persecution and execution of gnostics throughout the ages by the Church. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaDW9_mG4-k
