As Above, So Below; As Within, So Without; So the Universe, So the Soul.
This is one of the hermetic axioms outlined in the book 'The Kybalion' by 'The Three Initiates' purported by some to be Hermes Trismegistus, and by others to be William Walker Atkinson.
Hermes Trismegistus is purported to have been a mystic and wisdom teacher based between Egypt and Greece, from whom the wisdom school of hermeticism originated.
William Walker Atkinson was an American mystic of the 20th century who published many books on the occult and mystical teachings.
This axiom illustrates how our inner world matches what we see in the world around us, individually and collectively.
In other words, that the world is a mirror of what's inside of us.
This is a very useful understanding when it comes to the mind, the ego, our behaviour, and how we can project what's inside of out onto the world.
Knowing this, we realise that "if you spot it, you've got it" - what annoys us or triggers us in others points to something unhealed within ourselves.
It is also a very hopeful understanding to integrate because it shows us that anything we heal within us, we heal out there in the world.
This is where the biblical quote about "a new heaven and a new earth" derives its meaning from.
As humanity heals its inner world and raises its level of awareness, the outer world cannot help but be restored and beautified in reflection of that.
The other aspect of this axiom refers to how universal principles or patterns can be seen throughout all levels of creation.
A famous example of this would be how superclusters in the universe when visualised through computers look just like neural networks in the brain.
Another example is how the branches of trees looks like the pulmonary vessels of the lungs, showing our intimate symbiosis with each other.
Ultimately, this axiom brings great satisfaction and reassurance knowing that all is connected, that we live in an interdependent, loving universe.
