RCA Coin Operated Radio- What lurks underneath
Circuit Monkey
First video in the hopeful restoration of a 1930-1940 variant of an AA5 RCA radio from an interesting cabinet that includes a coin mech. The little research I have done indicates that these types of radios were common in motels and gave you 1 hour of play for a quarter. A couple of notes: A little cleaning has revealed that "weld" appears to be lead. Which I guess makes a bit of sense. It would have been fairly common from the local hardware store and would have made a reasonable repair in a pinch. Still looking for some suitable schematics, but the broken domino mica cap appears to be connected directly to the plate of the rectifier and the chassis. I thought they used electrolytic caps for the "death capacitor", but you learn something new everyday. Here is the tube compliment: 12SK7 12SA7 12SQ7 50L6GT and an unidentified rectifier, no writing but likely a 35Z4 or 35Z5 and a 6th mystery tube, 12A6
I will be doing more research and a ton of cleaning, so feel free to comment and thanks for watching! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0URO8G9iFE
