They are creating a system by making several Oracles, that work in a sense like freelancers, to retrieve information from a multitude of data sources that then aggregates the results. If an Oracle in the systems results deviate too far from the mean value, they will be excluded from the aggregation and will be punished by having less influence on future aggregation of data.

The Chainlink blockchain whitepaper states the system will be blockchain agnostic, so yes there will be other platforms in the mix, and they could likely be working on one right now, creating a proof of concept.
