Flight Following vs Chaos in the Skies: What Would You Do?

Flight following is a voluntary service given to VFR aircraft where ATC will give advisories regarding other aircraft, weather, hazards etc. as their workload allows. But it also helps them know who is doing what, to assist them in routing aircraft around one another. While flying my airplane, I heard this exchange on frequency that made it very clear just how difficult it can be when one pilot is not talking to ATC.
