Intel Ray Tracing For Everyone … Sort Of…

Let’s get started with Intel, A few months ago, the company unveiled OneAPI. One API is essentially a Unified programming model that should work with a lot of different hardware like GPU's CPU’s, FPGA’s or AI accelerators. Unifying different things at that scale for so many different segments is quite a big project and Nvidia’s CEO slammed intel saying that “Programming isn’t as simple as a powerpoint slide.” In any case, OneAPI is making the news again because it's going to open ray tracing to anyone! Or at least for a single game. And for a single purpose.

The EnCore engine from the developers of World of Tanks for PC will have ray tracing enabled all thanks to Intel’s OneApi rendering toolKit. For World of tanks though, Ray tracing will only work on Intact vehicles that are in direct sunlight. Whatever that is. Intact means they haven't taken damage right? which means you can move around with the ray-tracing enabled maybe? In any case, this ray tracing technology will work on any GPU’s that support Direct X11. Now, this isn’t a big implementation of it, but it shows that intel is willing to make OneApi something more than just big data center stuff.

Intel also helped World of Tanks to optimize their game for concurrent rendering. Basically a fancy word for Multicore rendering. If your GPU is fast but your CPU is slow but has for example 4 cores, then this might get you a better experience. Here is an example with an i7 3770 coupled with a 1070ti. It’s nice to see that intel isn’t taking the Nvidia approach in making everything only available for its products.
