Measuring the Earth | Equinox
Bob the Science Guy
March 20th was the equinox, a great day to do some home science. My friend BBall4Life not only helps me with the measurements, but helps me prove the earth cannot be flat.
We are using a variation on the method of Eratosthenes. Measuring the length of a shadow at solar noon, we can use it to determine our latitude and distance to the equator. With those values we can determine the circumference and radius of the earth. As the sun is at zenith, we avoid the refraction that induces error found in horizon based measurements.
NOTE CORRECTION.... While it does not change the results, my analogy with the magnifying glasses is incorrect. Thanks folks for pointing out the error in my ways on the specific example while confirming the substance of the video.
