The Gulag Archipelago by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is a three volume investigative history of the Gulag prison system in the Soviet Union. The book explains the origins of the system, how it operated, and what impact it had on society. Most importantly the book shed light on a side of Soviet Russia that was virtually unknown to the outside world.
