How to cut a bolt and measuring the distance between two holes

Over the many years of my electronics' career (I'm now retired), I've seen many clever a person flounder on the basics of cutting or cropping a bolt down to a required size. This was equally true for measuring the distance between two, the same diameter, drill holes. Once I saw these things done myself, as a youngster, I remembered them for a lifetime :) Note: I used two nuts simply because I only had 1/2 size nuts, yet it's probably true that the more nuts you have on the bolt - the cleaner will be the eventual thread.
