The nucleus is a vital organelle found in eukaryotic cells, often referred to as the control center of the cell. It plays a crucial role in storing and managing genetic information. Structure of the Nucleus
- Nuclear Envelope: The nucleus is surrounded by a double-layered membrane known as the nuclear envelope, which consists of two lipid bilayers. The outer membrane is continuous with the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and may have ribosomes attached to it, while the inner membrane is lined with a network of proteins known as the nuclear lamina.
- Nuclear Pore Complexes: Embedded within the nuclear envelope are numerous nuclear pore complexes, which are large protein structures that regulate the passage of molecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm. These pores allow for selective transport of proteins, RNA, and other macromolecules, maintaining the nucleus's distinct environment.
- Nucleoplasm: Inside the nuclear envelope is a semi-fluid substance called nucleoplasm, which contains various molecules, including nucleotides, enzymes, and proteins. The nucleoplasm serves as a medium for biochemical reactions and the suspension of chromatin and the nucleolus.
- Chromatin: The genetic material within the nucleus is organized into chromatin, which exists in two forms: euchromatin and heterochromatin. Euchromatin is loosely packed and transcriptionally active, while heterochromatin is tightly packed and typically inactive, playing a role in gene regulation and maintaining chromosome structure.
- Nucleolus: The nucleolus is a prominent structure within the nucleus, responsible for synthesizing ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and assembling ribosomal subunits.
