Nmap Tutorial | Introduction | Ethical Hacking | Information Gathering
Avoiding Big Brother
This is an introduction to Nmap. This tutorial will show you a few basic scans that you can perform with this information gathering tool. Nmap is a network scanner used in the early stages of offensive security by penetration testers.
Pen testers are looking for vulnerabilities in networks and applications and Nmap can assist in finding them. It is the job for network security to patch vulnerabilities before they are discovered by threat actors.
In the video, I discover open ports (on a metasploitable machine and legal!) and then perform another scan to discover an application/service running on a port. The application running on the port has a known vulnerability that can be exploited.
Nmap can also be used for fingerprinting to discover hosting, system, and operating system information. I do not show this in the video.
