Changing Your Router | ISP Router To An Alternative | pfSense Firewall | Privacy & Security
Avoiding Big Brother
This video goes through the steps you need to take to replace your internet service provider's (ISP) router with an alternative. You must do some research and this may include some phone calls to your ISP and cabling infrastructure firms. ISP routers are not the best for privacy. The device may collect data on your internet activities and observe what you are doing online.
For better security from hackers, you should install a firewall on your router. pfSense is the one most security researchers and YouTubers are recommending. There will be other solutions. Do your research and decide on what is best for your needs. If pfSense is for you, then you can check out this video by Naomi Brockwell, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-bDpZoG--w
Things to research before purchasing a router:
- Do you have permission to change the router to an alternative by the ISP? (If not, then it is time to change your ISP)
- What routers are approved and who approves them?
- Can the router run firewall software such as pfSense?
- Is the router you are interested in buying going to have enough connection points for all of your devices?
- Is the speed of the router (the processor) suitable for your needs?
- Does the router offer Ethernet wired connections? (Better for securing networks than Wi-Fi)
