Red meat has gotten a bad wrap as many call it unhealthy and a risk for developing cancer. This notion that red meat causes cancer comes from the 2015 decision from the international agency for research on cancer, also known as IARC. They declared red meat as a group 2A carcinogen. Group 2A carcinogens are considered “probably carcinogenic” by IARC. They used a meta analysis compiling over 800 epidemiological and controlled studies as their reasoning. This study also claims that there is “strong mechanistic evidence” that red meat is a carcinogen because of a few compounds found in red meat.
