According to national broadcaster ABC and Reuters, the US military has developed a plan that would send nuclear-capable B-52 strategic bombers to Australia on long-term rotational missions and turn the nation's Northern Territory into a key military hub in Washington's confrontation with Beijing.

According to ABC's Four Corners investigative program, the Pentagon apparently wants to construct a "squadron operations facility" at the Royal Australian Air Force military air base at Tindal. This facility would reportedly feature a maintenance facility and ample parking space for six B-52s.
