The US Embassy in Canberra said in a statement to The Guardian on Tuesday that Australia's signing of the pact "would not allow for US extended deterrent relationships," referring to the US "nuclear umbrella" that promises to defend some non-nuclear governments with America's enormous nuclear weapons.
